Perform weekly water changes of 40% to 70% to match their pristine riverine origins.
Use soft non sharp gravel or fine sand to protect their delicate mouthparts and barbels. Provide smooth river stones, boulders, and narrow clay or slate caves. Add pieces of driftwood; while they do not digest wood, they graze on the biofilm that grows on it.
Check the fish's stomach profile regularly. A sunken or hollow belly is a critical sign of starvation, a common issue during their initial acclimation phase.
High-quality algae wafers, spirulina pellets, and sinking omnivore tablets. Blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach, and sweet potato. Occasional feeding of frozen bloodworms, Cyclops, or brine shrimp to round out their diet. Encourage natural algae and biofilm growth on rocks and wood.
Generally peaceful and shy towards other non-catfish species. They are highly territorial over hiding spots. Avoid housing multiple males together unless the tank is large with a surplus of caves. Mid-to-top water community fish such as Tetras, Rasboras, hatchetfish, or peaceful dwarf cichlids. Avoid fast, voracious bottom feeders that might outcompete the pleco for sinking foods.
